The demand for housing in our region continues to significantly outpace residential housing supply, making it difficult to purchase reasonably priced homes near job centers. In response, the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties (MBAKS) has identified a 10-point action plan to help provide attainable housing for our growing population.

  • EDITORIAL: A moratorium is not the answer to our housing affordability crisis

    Over the past 18 months, five King County cities have adopted a building moratorium, temporarily putting the brakes on new home construction. While a moratorium is legal, it does not mean it is good policy. At a time when demand for housing is far outpacing housing supply, which drives up both home prices and rents and makes housing less attainable, building moratoria certainly are not good for housing. They also are not good for our economy or the families and workers looking for a home closer to job centers. Furthermore, they potentially could run counter to our region’s transportation investments that contemplate the need for more transit-oriented development in certain areas.

  • Mercer Island, land of the luxury home, cracks down on building mansions

    Mercer Island, one of the most expensive real-estate markets in the country, is limiting the development of mansions with new restrictions that go further than any other local city in capping the size of huge homes. The regulations, passed 5-1 by the island’s City Council late Tuesday, are the result of a yearlong effort to address residents’ concerns about gleaming new mega-homes towering over single-story ramblers built half a century ago. It’s the latest in a long line of fights in the town to limit development.
