General Membership Meeting

Friday, March 29, 2013

Time: 7:30 a.m.

MBA Housing Center, 335 116th Ave. SE, Bellevue

On Friday, March 29, 2013 at 7:30 a.m., a meeting will be held at the Master Builders Assocition Housing Center to vote on the proposed bylaw changes. The identified representative of each member in good standing is invited to attend the meeting and will be allowed to vote.

At 2013 President Brian Ross' Leadership Retreat, 17 past, present and future Association leaders debated the composition of the board and its role to better govern the Association in the future. All participants read "The Race for Relevance" (Coerver and Byers, 2011), a book about how associations need to restructure themselves to prepare for changing membership demographics; different product and service demands; and increased technological opportunities. A basic tenant of the book is that an association board of directors needs to be small, competency-based and policy-focused. All who attended the Leadership Retreat agreed that our current board of 30 directors is too large and that meeting every month, except July and August, is too often. Retaining the five chair officers (president, first vice president, second vice president, past president and secretary) as an executive committee, who work directly with the CEO, was endorsed as part of a positive and productive governance model. After almost two days of debate, the group arrived at a recommended restructuring of your Association's board.

At the January and February board meetings, an overwhelming majority of directors voted to recommend bylaw governance changes to the general membership for passage. Click here to see the changes endorsed by your board. If the bylaws changes are adopted, your Association will again lead the nation in innovative thinking by adapting to the changing circumstances in association management and membership. We are lucky to have a visionary leader like President Brian Ross prepare the Association for the next two decades of demographic change, as 10,000 people a day turn 65 years old.
